As we transition through menopause our bodies find it more difficult to process alcohol. Our liver, already working overtime, will break down alcohol more slowly which impacts how we feel in the moment as well as the next morning too. In addition, because our serotonin production and pleasure receptors in the brain are influenced by oestrogen decline, the depressive effect of alcohol is exacerbated which means, even if we found alcohol mood-lifting historically, it is very likely to lower our mood.
The good news? As we learn more about the impact of alcohol on our bodies and minds, a whole industry of delicious alcohol-free drink options has sprung up. In fact, in the last 12 months, the industry has grown a whopping 31% in the USA and 23% in the UK, where 87% of pubs now also offer alcohol free beer.
If you’re looking to keep your hormones happy and your body hangover free this holiday season, we’ve a few tried and tested recipes to make it easy from our wonderful expert community.
Bitter lemon & lime cocktail
Juice of 1⁄2 lemon
Juice of 1⁄2 lime
6 dashes of bitters (e.g. Angostura bitters)
Simply squeeze the fruit into your glass with your bitters, and top with sparkling water and ice.
Sand between your toes
125g frozen pineapple cubes
50ml coconut water
Juice of ½ lime
Dash of maple syrup
Pinch of sea salt
Simply stick everything into the blender and blitz until you have a daiquiri consistency.
Bite the cherry
1 shot of the lovely Pentire Seaward
1 tbsp of Mentmorency Cherry Juice
Juice of ½ a grapefruit
300ml of sparkling water.
Mix all the ingredients and serve over ice.
